“The story of private life is an account of the prolonged effort to feel comfortable.”

For Bill Bryson, this could be the summary of millennia of human habitation evolution.

Since the industrial revolution, comfort has become necessary to alleviate the harshness of domestic life.

The history of each room in the residences shows us how difficult it was to survive with all the necessities, including personal hygiene and food care.

The interesting thing is that the book allows us to travel the world between the garden and the bathroom, the basement and the dining room. This opens our horizons to understand “home”, “living”. In addition to knowledge and culture, it also helps us to better study our way of designing.
