“Every organism is, in some sense, continuous with its environment through the boundaries of its skin, exchanging matter and energy.” – James Gibson
Impact of Built Environments on Health and Wellbeing
Our buildings, neighborhoods and cities directly impact our health and well-being. This basic fact is increasingly recognized in many professions involved in the design and maintenance of the built environment.
However, we still know little about how the relationship between people and environments really works. How are our experiences, behaviors, emotions and community engagement shaped by the built environment?
The Contribution of Neuroscience and Cognitive Science
Several scientific disciplines, especially those related to neuroscience and cognitive science, have been called upon to fill this gap. Meetings between scientists and design professionals have provided a new frontier of knowledge and an improved understanding of the roles and responsibilities of the designer.
Moving Boundaries: Spreading New Understanding
Moving Boundaries is an international, interdisciplinary initiative that seeks to spread this new understanding through education and advocacy. The initiative operates at the interface between aforementioned scientific disciplines and design disciplines such as architecture, urban planning, landscaping and interior design.
Based in San Diego and La Jolla, California, where the respected Academy of Neuroscience for Architecture (ANFA) is located, Moving Boundaries establishes active connections with design schools around the world. This initiative is ready to organize a global event bringing together students, professionals and organizations that share our vision and values.
A Platform for Collaboration and Inspiring Legacy
In its breadth, Moving Boundaries is designed to serve as a platform for collaboration between educators, scientists, professionals and architecture students, as well as design, research and learning institutions.
Inspired by ideas and creations from renowned architects such as Richard Neutra, Frank Lloyd Wright, Alvaro Siza Vieira, Louis Kahn, Alvar Aalto, Carlo Scarpa, Luis Barragan, Balkrishna Doshi and Juhani Pallasmaa, as well as innovative thinkers such as Maurice Merleau-Ponty in France and John Dewey in the United States, our goal is to approach design from an uncompromising humanistic perspective, committed to personal flourishing and focused on the physical health and psychological well-being of individuals.
